Good wedding music makes for an elegant, grand wedding. But sometimes, it can get expensive. If you’re set on going for fine wedding music but are on a tight budget, consider the following tips to get you what you want but stay within your means.
Think outside wedding fairs and directories
Seasoned wedding professionals can command top dollar when it comes to their services. Think out of the box by checking out local music lounges, universities and schools for musicians who want to increase their experience or are looking to make their break. Make time to talk to music teachers who can recommend their best students.
Combine live and canned
If your musicians charge by the hour, alternating their performance with canned music may help you cut costs. Have them play live while the guests are awaiting your arrival, or during important parts of the program and ceremony. Then, switch to a canned CD mix as your guests are busy concentrating on the food.
Settle for a smaller ensemble
Skip the grand multi-membered groups and settle for fewer musicians. Perhaps setting for a violinist and a flutist instead of a quartet. Or hiring a pianist who has a wide repertoire instead of going for the works.
Arrange for packages
Discuss your options with the musicians you are eyeing. Some offer affordable packages when you book them for both the ceremony and the reception. Ask them whether they’re willing to split up, for instance, having just the pianist cover the ceremony and just having the rest of the band show up for the reception.
Tap talented family members or friends to perform
Instead of scouting everywhere, scout within your circle of friends. Some of them might have the skill and talent to perform at your wedding and are only waiting for you to ask. Call in favors and ask them to perform at your wedding as a gift to you and your spouse. If you have more than one friend who’s willing to perform, a song or two from each may be enough to add the much needed musical ambiance.
